HFC Human-Factors-Consult was founded as a spin-off of the Technical University Berlin in 2002 and has established itself since then as a specialist for human-centered design of technology. In a continuously growing interdisciplinary team of engineers, psychologists, computer scientists, and designers HFC offers support in the scientific evaluation and design of technical systems that are developed to be operated or used by humans.

Main focus of the company's work is the analysis of psycho-physiological data including gaze measurement and physiological measures like ECG, EMG, or EDA. In parallel, HFC develops trainings as well as training simulators for driver education, for the safety sector and for the design of avionic systems.

Human factors in tunnel safety

Searching for reasons and causes of tunnel-security deficits, the analyst consistently comes across the so called 'human factors'. Humans are named regularly as causes of accidents. Humans impact themselves and others through their malpractices. Humans show wrong decision making when trying to cope with catastrophes. However, humans can save human lives. The highest impact on safety can be reached when technical measures are taken or training and education facilitate error-prevention as well as support error-elimination.

HFC Human-Factors-Consult works as 'expert for humans in technical environments' together with manufacturers and operators to develop measures for an optimal design and operation of tunnels, taking into account the knowledge about human abilities and limits.
